With almost 50 schools visited, Glory’s Community Department has enjoyed an incredibly successful second term of Sporting Schools.

From Alinjarra Primary in Alexander Heights to Majella Primary in Balga, Perth Glory’s community department have been everywhere the past couple months.

With the fun-filled sessions putting broad smiles on all the kids’ faces, it’s been an absolute treat to teach the students specific skills, while also placing an emphasis on polite behaviour and teamwork.

Alinjarra school teacher, Royale Campbell, was full of praise for the coaches efforts over the past five weeks.

“They’ve been fantastic, the coaches have been amazing,” she said.

“Their skill levels have improved and so have mine, just from watching and helping out, which it a bonus,” Campbell explained.

Mrs Campbell also commended the importance of participation in sport, which the program endeavours to encourage in the primary school students.

“The kids all love playing together as a team,

“The proof in the program is the fact we’ve got a lightning carnival coming up and our teams are full such is the enthusiasm for the sport now, they’ve been very, very keen,” she added.

Michael Garcia has relished the opportunity to head to metropolitan and rural schools and spread the beautiful game.

“During term two we’ve been very busy, visiting around 50 schools, which has been great,” he said.

Glory coach Paul Zimmarino echoed his thoughts, saying “it’s been fantastic to open up the soccer community to more people.”

Garcia, the former National Soccer League (NSL) star, explained the benefits go far beyond learning a few new soccer skills.

“It’s about getting the kids active and to lead a healthy lifestyle,” he explained.

“We place an emphasis on general teamwork as well, it’s part of our structure program, so we’ll commence the clinics with technique work and finish it off with games,” Garcia added.

The Sporting Schools clinics run for a minimum of four weeks, with some schools enjoying 20 sessions, meaning there’s some real development taking place.

“Having longer sessions allows us to know the students better and allows them to build a greater connection with Perth Glory,” Garcia said.

It’s been a very successful and enriching second term this year and the Community Department can’t wait for more.
