ALM Match Wrap: Record-breaker Taggart secures deserved draw with City

Adam Taggart took centre-stage at HBF Park on Sunday afternoon, sweeping home a last-gasp goal to secure a 1-1 draw with Melbourne City and in the process, become Glory’s stand-alone all-time record A-League goalscorer.

Adam Griffiths’ side had trailed to a first-half effort from Daniel Arzani and despite creating a host of chances after the break, look destined for defeat as the game moved into stoppage-time.

But after substitute Jaiden Kucharski managed to get away down the right and send in a low cross, home skipper Taggart was on hand to bag his 60th goal in purple with a typically clinical finish.

The result leaves Glory five points outside the top six with four games left to play following next weekend’s international break.

On a warm autumn afternoon in the West, the hosts managed to create a chance inside the opening 15 seconds as Stefan Colakovski got a shot away and Patrick Beach was forced to make a smart save low to his left.

But City soon responded in kind via a shot from Kavian Rahmani which Matt Sutton did well to claw away, followed by a Samuel Souprayen effort that the Glory ‘keeper pushed around the post.

Daniel Arzani was involved in the build up to both of those chances and having tormented the Glory defence right from the off, it came as no surprise that it was the Socceroos schemer who drilled his side ahead midway through the first half.

Glory were unable to clear their lines, the ball fell kindly for Arzani in the box and after buying himself some space with a clever first touch, he drilled a shot past Sutton with his second.

The response from the home side came via a Sam Sutton corner which flashed right across the six-yard box and an effort from the recalled Seb Despotovski that was directed straight at Beach.

Attacking The Shed in the second half, Glory redoubled their efforts and Aziz Behich was forced to make two fine sliding blocks in quick succession to deny Taggart.

City responded with a powerful header from Max Caputo which flew just over the bar as the chances continued to flow, but it was the men in purple who slowly began to gain the ascendancy.

Taggart continued his epic quest for the record-breaking goal, heading inches wide, before twice being denied by Beach as the home supporters roared their side on in the final quarter.

And finally, as the clock ticked into stoppage-time, the moment came, Beach was finally beaten, off came Taggart’s shirt and both his place in Glory history and a deserved point were secured.
