Cheered on by an away bay filled with vocal supporters participating in the annual Glory Shed Tour of Duty, the men in purple had their chances in the first half but were severely punished for failing to take them.
Juan Muniz grabbed Adelaide’s first goal with a 12th-minute free-kick before Jonny Yull made it 2-0 via a crisp finish on the half-hour mark.
United’s top scorer Luke Jovanovic tapped home his side’s third early in the second half and substitute Luke Duzel completed the scoring in stoppage-time with a fine individual effort.
The result leaves Glory four points outside the top six ahead of next Saturday’s trip to Brisbane Roar, while a fourth win in their last six outings lifts the hosts into third place.
On a warm evening in the South Australian capital, both teams showed plenty of attacking intent right from the off, but it was the hosts who were the more clinical in front of goal.
12 minutes had elapsed when their opening goal arrived, Will Freney’s foul on Ethan Alagich right on the edge of the box yielding a free-kick which Muniz duly thumped past Matt Sutton.
Glory responded by creating a decent chance of their own, Adam Taggart almost managing to divert the ball home after Scott Wootton had nodded Sam Sutton’s free-kick back across the face of goal.
And Taggart then turned provider, teeing up a shooting opportunity for Charbel Shamoon who sent his outside-of-the-boot effort wide of the far post.
Glory were made to pay for that profligacy in front of goal as United doubled their lead on the half-hour mark, some slipshod defending allowing Alagich to unleash a shot which was parried by Sutton to the feet of Yull who swept home his fourth goal of the season.
The visitors were then left with a mountain to climb when Adelaide made it 3-0 moments after the restart, Yaya Dukuly leading a rapid counter-attack before moving the ball on to Ryan White whose low cross was converted by Jovanovic.
That goal all but ended the game as a contest, but there was further drama to come in the last ten minutes as Glory defender Andriano Lebib was initially sent off for appearing to catch Brody Burkitt with a high boot, only for VAR to correctly amend the colour of the card from red to yellow.
And right at the death, Duzel weaved his way into the box before placing a shot past Sutton to complete a night to forget for the visitors.
