ALM Match Wrap: Late Colakovski goal seals precious point on the road

A stoppage-time goal from Stefan Colakovski secured Glory a precious point as they battled out a 2-2 draw with in-form Macarthur FC at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Friday evening.

In what was a transitional contest throughout, the visitors hit the front shortly before the break when home ‘keeper Filip Kurto fumbled Nicholas Pennington’s shot into the net.

Macarthur responded strongly in the second half and goals from Mitch Duke and Callum Talbot in the space of 12 minutes looked to have set them on course for victory.

But Glory were to have the last word as Kurto and the Bulls’ defence failed to deal with a long ball over the top and Colakovski gleefully latched onto the loose ball before slamming home.

The hard-fought draw moved Adam Griffiths’ men to within one point of the top six ahead of the weekend’s remaining games.

On an overcast, sticky night in Sydney’s south west, the tempo and intensity during the opening half-hour was high, even if neither side quite managed to carve out much in the way of clear goalscoring opportunities.

Tom Lawrence did see a free-kick pushed away by Kurto and Matt Sutton had to be similarly alert at the other end to prevent Brian Kaltak from inadvertently prodding Sime Grzan’s cross into his own net, but it appeared that a piece of brilliance or an error would be required to break the deadlock and it proved to be the latter.

There looked to be little danger when Pennington sent in a low shot on the turn from just inside the box and it may even have been drifting wide, but in his attempt to push it away, Kurto instead somehow contrived to scoop it into his own net.

Glory came close to doubling their lead early in the second half, but Seb Despotovski was adjudged to have been marginally offside when converting a fine cross from Sam Sutton and the Bulls made the most of that let-off almost immediately.

Socceroos representative Mitch Duke had been a thorn in Glory’s side all evening and on the hour-mark, he managed to get on the end of a Talbot cross and steer a header past Sutton.

That leveller gave Mile Sterjovski’s men a huge boost and they soon grabbed a second, Talbot bagging a fine goal to go with his assist as he cut in from the right and unleashed a left-foot curler which deflected off the top of Scott Wootton’s head on its way into the far corner.

The rampant Bulls soon came close to increasing their advantage, former Glory man Chris Ikonomidis and Luke Vickery both striking the woodwork and substitute Harry Sawyer also going close on two occasions.

At that stage the hosts look well placed to avenge their home defeat by Glory in Round 6, but the WA side showed great resolve to stand firm and ultimately claim a deserved share of the spoils, albeit in bizarre circumstances, right at the death.

Kurto came racing out of his area in a bid to deal with Wootton’s long ball over the top, only to miss it completely and fell the onrushing Kucharski instead, allowing Colakovski to nip in and claim his first goal since returning to the club last month.
