Seb Despotovski, Adam Taggart and substitute Khoa Ngo all went desperately close to finding the net for the home side who were ultimately kept at bay by some heroic defending and several fine saves from Central Coast ‘keeper Andrew Redmayne.
The goal that proved enough to secure all three points for the Mariners arrived 12 minutes into the second half when Bailey Brandtman stepped inside from the right channel and curled a superb, left-foot shot past Matthew Sutton and into the far corner.
Fired up to secure a first win of the season, the men in purple began brightly, with Despotovski going close twice in the opening stages.
Will Freney’s pinpoint corner delivery was also proving troublesome for the visitors’ defence and they were grateful to Redmayne for punching away a driven inswinger which threatened to find the net in the 17th minute.
The Socceroos representative was then forced into an acrobatic save, this time to claw away a dinked effort from Taggart as Glory continued their dominance right up to the half-time whistle.
Having regrouped during the break, the Mariners forced their way into the contest early in the second period and moments after Miguel Di Pizio had been thwarted by Sutton, Brandtman found a way past the Glory ‘keeper with a pinpoint strike.
It took the hosts a little time to recover from that body blow, but Ngo provided some extra energy when introduced from the bench and the livewire winger came agonisingly close to bagging what would have been his first A-League goal when he bent a low shot inches wide with 20 minutes left to play.
Roared on by The Shed, Glory redoubled their efforts and piled on the pressure in the latter stages, but with Nathan Paull to the fore, the New South Wales side stood firm to secure their second win of the season.
