An Aussie Day sausage sizzle, concert, pyrotechnics and sponsor giveaways, will be on offer, when pride and passion collide in the blockbuster match between Perth Glory FC and Melbourne Victory on Sunday January 25.
“The People’s Game” at nib Stadium on the eve of Australia Day, will be more than a match. It’s set to be a spectacle for fans and players to celebrate an important date on the national calendar and a chance for supporters to show their West Aussie pride as the Hyundai A-League leaders aims to beat Victory for the third time this season.
The team’s third kit, designed by Perth Glory FC fan Mark Rossi, featuring the traditional black and gold state colours, will be worn by the players on the day. The strip was voted as the best kit, from dozens of entries in our annual “The People’s Game” competition.
Perth Glory FC is urging all fans and supporters to come along and celebrate the Australia Day long weekend, and see Glory extend its lead at the top of the table. Glory holds the upper hand over Victory after inflicting a dramatic 4-2 defeat on Melbourne at nib Stadium in the FFA Cup quarter final.
Glory then travelled the long distance to Geelong on New Year’s Day to beat Kevin Muscat’s men 2-1. Now, Glory is aiming to be victorious one more time for the first Hyundai A-League clash between the two sides at home.
“I haven’t experienced an Australia Day clash before but I’m quickly looking forward to being part of it, wearing the state colours and seeing this huge event unfold” said new German recruit Dragan Paljic.
“Coming from Germany and having a Serbian background I know what it is to be proud of your state and country so I’m hoping to play and get a feel of the rivalry between these two powerhouse clubs” he said.
Perth Glory skipper, Michael Thwaite, told PGFC online he planned on spending some time with another favourite sporting pastime on Australia Day.
“Australia Day to me is backyard cricket and a family barbecue,” the centre-back said.
If ‘Thwaitey’ can transfer his form on the pitch into form with the bat, he’s in for a long day at the crease!
Meanwhile Perth native Brandon O’Neill intends to take a more relaxed approach to with hopes of kicking his feet up pool side.
Josh Risdon was feeling reflective, recalling his Australia Day memories created at home in Bunbury – or more specifically sitting at the The Hungry Hollow overlooking Bunbury’s Back Beach.
The best way to kick off your celebrations this Australia Day will be at nib Stadium to cheer on Glory on January 25. For the first time Glory fans will also be permitted for a kick on the pitch after the game.
